The Dallas Mavericks emerged in the playoffs for the first time on Thursday, due to being faced with an 0-2 deficit and the knowledge that no team in the history of the league has come back from a 3-0 deficit, but whether or not they will reemerge in their best of seven series with the Houston Rockets still remains to be seen.

Perhaps the most interesting stat of the night and what’s been harped about in many articles similar to this one is that Dallas is 17-0 this season when Michael Finley and Dirk Nowitzki each score at least twenty points.

The Mavericks got 28 from Nowitzki on 9-16 shooting. Finley put down 20 on 6-10 shooting from the floor.

Jerry Stackhouse also did what’s been expected of him through out the entire playoffs by scoring 18 points.

The key moments came during a Dallas Mavericks 20-0 run which quickly erased an 11 point deficit and propelled the Mavericks to a 106-102 win in Houston.

Yao Ming was kept in check with only 15 points, compared to the Baby Shaq numbers he’d been putting up in the previous two games, and Tracy McGrady needed 23 shots to score 28 points, which is pretty good given that he only made 9 of the 23 shots he took.

Whether or not the Mavericks will regain control of this series remains to be seen, but what they have regained is the confidence needed to reemerge in these playoffs.

By the way, Avery Johnson’s got his first playoff win and it couldn’t have come at a more crucial time, but to quote Carmelo from the other night, “The second one’s harder than the first. ”

We’ll have to wait to see how hard it is.
