The Dallas Mavericks did everything they could except win tonight in Dallas and will now go to Houston in trying to dig themselves out of a huge hole after losing 113-111 to the Houston Rockets on Tracy McGrady’s game winner with 2.2 seconds remaining.

While the Mavericks were able to limit Yao’s offensive output in game 1, the ran into enormous difficulties this evening as Yao Ming scored 33 points on 13-14 shooting from the floor. They also gave up 28 points to T-Mac including the game winner.

The Mavericks however did make several adjustments from Game 1. Among them was their remarkable three point shooting (10-15) from behind the arc and they were able to get to the line 26 times but missed seven crucial free throws, including an incredibly rare two misses by Dirk Nowitzki.

Nowitzki however played a much more aggressive game this evening and got to the charity stripe 12 times. His shooting however did not improve by that much from Game 1, as he finished with 26 points on 8-21 shooting.

All five starters were in double figures for the Mavericks, but they’re going to need more than ten points from Michael Finley, who missed a potential game tying shot as time inspired. Erick Dampier also provided the Mavericks with several key offensive rebounds, but whether or not Dallas rebounds from an 0-2 series deficit remains to be seen as Houston is 7-0 in team history when leading a series 2-0. In order to accomplish this improbable feat, the Mavericks will need more than eight points from Jerry Stackhouse and a better all around defense against the ever-elusive T-Mac Yao pick and roll.

Avery Johnson will look deeper than the Bible to get his team involved in this series. Look for the Mavericks to play their hearts out facing thorny on the road circumstances.
